And despite past suits and viral horror tales, wilderness treatment is still a thriving market in the U.S
The methods of these programs differ, as do the reasons that parents send their teenagers to them. USA TODAY connected to wild treatment programs and their proponents, that safeguarded their practices as enhancing and useful to participants. Trails Carolina, for instance, states it completely trains its staff, involves parents in the process and creates individual treatment prepare for each student.
Doubters point to the number of claims and deaths at wild treatment camps as a clear indicator that moms and dads, legislators and the media need to be looking much more closely at these organizations. Among the casualties: In 1990, 16-year-old Kristen Chase passed away of heatstroke 3 days after reaching her wilderness program.
The same year, Charles Moody, 17, died of asphyxiation after being restrained. In 2005, Anthony Haynes, 14, died while being penalized at a wilderness bootcamp. In 2007, Caleb Jensen, 15, died while at a wild camp, his body located bundled in a feces- and urine-soaked sleeping bag. In 2011, Daniel Huerta, 17, passed away while being driven by a team member.

"We weren't aware of all this," Tessie claims with splits.
